- Story Text: A gathering of tribal elders from the desert town of Bani Walid and representatives of Libya's new interim rulers raised hope of a peaceful solution that the town could join the large anti-Gaddafi movement that has all but ended 42 years of Muammar Gaddafi's reign.
A tribal leader from Bani Walid, Abdul Qader Ganyeh, said most of the town's residents were opposed to fighting an advance by fighters loyal to the pro-democracy ruling interim council.
"We held many meetings, and I can say 90 percent of Bani Walid's people are with a peaceful solution and against the bloodshed, and Bani Walid is a part of Libya and will play a role in its future and it will not accept being labelled 'rebellious'," he said.
Fighters and representatives of the ruling council cried and embraced the tribal figures whilst others fired their weapons into the air outside the mosque, where the meeting took place, in a show of celebration. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
