- Story Text: At Dar al Kalima centre in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour, a unique programme has brought together people to train in hydrotherapy to help the mentally and physically disabled cope with everyday living.
Water therapist Ala'a Salhab said the course at the centre was the first of its kind in the Palestinian Territories.
"Water treatment began ages ago throughout the world. In the last 20 years therapists have been using this treatment, but in Palestine this is the first experience," Salhab said.
Water therapy has been widely used across Europe and the United States for decades.
The training course runs through the winter since swimming pools are busy during the summer time.
The organiser of the course, Saadah Sahouri, told Reuters Television therapists participate in a three-month programme where they are given the opportunity to train first in hydrotherapy theory and then they learn the technical skills required to offer the treatment.
"I will cover the theoretical part of the hydrotherapy, which means determining the aims, assessing, and also providing the scientific proof of the importance of water therapy," Sahouri said.
To date, some 20 therapists from the West Bank have participated in the programme, all saying they have noticed the benefits of the course and its implementation.
Studies show water can play a remarkable role in therapy -- it is recommended for the relief of various physical disabilities as it helps treat the muscle and joint discomfort. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
