- Story Text: Palestinians on Wednesday (July 30) held a funeral procession for a 10-year-old Palestinian boy who was shot and killed by Israeli forces during clashes with stone-throwing protesters a day earlier in the occupied West Bank village of Nilin.
The body of 10-year-old Ahmed Moussa arrived in Nilin by ambulance after it was brought from Ramallah and was greeted by hundreds of mourners.
Tear gas, sound bombs and rubber bullets were fired at the funeral procession after scuffles broke out between some of the mourners and Israel soldiers. The soldiers also sealed off the entrance to the village were stone-throwing Palestinian youths had gathered.
Palestinian witnesses and medical officials said the boy had been shot in the head on Tuesday (July 30) near the West Bank village of Nilin, where demonstrators gather almost daily to protest against the construction of Israel's barrier on West Bank Palestinian land.
Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesperson for the Israeli police who were operating at the scene of the shooting on Tuesday, said the Israeli authorities were launching an investigation into the shooting, adding that the boy's family have refused to hand over the body to the Israelis for an autopsy to be carried out.
Palestinian medical officials and witnesses say the boy was shot and killed with live ammunition fired by Israeli border police who have used live bullets in recent weeks against rock hurdling Palestinian, Israeli and international protesters in various villages throughout the West Bank.
Since the beginning of its construction in 2002, the barrier has brought about protests. Some West Bank demonstrations against the wall have resulted in violent clashes and casualties between demonstrators and Israeli forces. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
