- Story Text: A Palestinian infiltrator killed five Israelis in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank early on Saturday (March 12), an Israeli military spokesperson said.
Major Peter Lerner said the attacker broke into a house in the settlement of Itamar in the middle of the night and stabbed to death a couple and three children, including a baby, from the same family.
"This evening, a terrorist entered a private home in the settlement of Itamar and brutally murdered five people, three children and two parents. The result is fatal and it means that the IDF has began, in a military operation, to try and put our hands on these perpetrators," Lerner said.
Lerner added that troops were searching for the attacker in the area around Itamar, which is near the Palestinian city of Nablus.
A soldier flying an unmanned drone could be seen flying over the area.
Itamar is home to some of the more ardent Jewish settlers in the West Bank. According to the YESHA settler's council, about 100 families live there.
The attack on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, was the most serious of its kind in months and will likely hamper efforts to restart stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
The religious settlement had a similar attack in 2002 during a violent Palestinian uprising when a gunman broke into a home and opened fire, killing four. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
