- Story Text: Palestinians and some international activists demonstrated across the West Bank on Friday (March 20) against Jewish settlements and the Israeli-built separation barrier.
Israel has said that the barrier, a mix of walls and electric fences that encroaches on West Bank territory, is meant to keep suicide bombers out of its territory. Palestinians call the barrier -- the course of which encompasses Israeli settlements in the West Bank -- a disguised move to annex or fragment territory Palestinians seek for a viable state.
In the village of Nilin, dozens of international peace activists and Palestinians were also protesting at the wounding of a U.S. citizen by an Israeli tear gas canister during a similar demonstration the previous week.
Israeli soldiers shot tear gas again on Friday. An army spokesperson said that more than 250 protesters threw stones at Israeli forces, who retaliated with 'riot dispersal means'.
In Um Salmona, scores of Palestinians and peace activists also gathered to protest against the construction of the separation barrier. There were some confrontations with soldiers.
In Jayous, hundreds of Palestinians, internationals and some Israeli peace activists demonstrated.
Jayous has been a flashpoint of clashes on Fridays over the past months, as large areas of land belonging to villagers was confiscated by Israel in order to construct the controversial West Bank separation barrier.
The Israeli army announced a curfew. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
