- Story Text: A young Palestinian man was arrested for possession of an explosive device, Israeli soldiers said. At the Howara checkpoint which stands at the entrance of the West Bank city of Nablus, hundreds of Palestinians waited for over an hour at the closed checkpoint as scuffles broke out between family members of the detainee and Israeli soldiers. A Palestinian youth was arrested at the Howara checkpoint located at an entrance to the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday (May 2) after a young man was found in possession of an explosive device, the Israeli soldiers manning the checkpoint said.
They said the explosive device was later detonated by the Israeli army under controlled conditions close to the Howara checkpoint.
The mother of the detained young man, and other family members, arrived at the checkpoint to find her son handcuffed, blindfolded and being detained by the Israeli army.
Her attempts to remove his blindfold and free him from his restraints resulted in scuffles between Israeli soldiers and family members and the young man being put into an army vehicle.
Waiting in long queues at Howara checkpoint were hundreds of Palestinians, who stood for over an hour at the closed checkpoint until what the Israeli army said were explosives had been detonated. A woman from Nablus fainted as soldiers attempted to control the angry crowd. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
