- Story Text: Palestinians, activists confront Israeli army in weekly anti-barrier protest, a week after a Palestinian was killed by Israeli fire in a similar demonstration.
Clashes broke out between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian and Israeli peace activists on Friday (June 12) in protests against the continuation of the Israeli construction of the separation barrier in the West Bank.
In what has become a weekly event, the West Bank village of Bilin, scores of protesters holding signs and banners and chanting slogans, marched toward the separation barrier.
Israeli soldiers fired tear gas grenades as some protesters hurled stones toward them.
No injuries were reported.
On June 5th, Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man in a confrontation with stone-throwing protesters during an anti-barrier demo.
An Israeli army spokesperson said troops had opened fire when protesters threw stones at them in the village, but would not confirm whether the troops had used live ammunition.
The barrier in the Bilin area cuts some 3 km (2 miles) into the village, separating some farmers from their fields.
Israel says the barrier it has built along its boundary with the West Bank, territory it captured in a 1967 war, is needed to keep bombers from infiltrating its towns.
Palestinians denounce the network of fencing and concrete walls, which cuts into the West Bank in spots such as Nilin, as a land grab that denies them territory they want for a future state. In 2004 the World Court ruled the barrier was illegal. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
