- Story Text: Scuffles ensued after Palestinians and Israeli peace activists protested on Friday (May 8) near a temporary structure erected on a hill north of the West Bank city of Hebron.
The peace activists attempted to set up a symbolic shelter made of cardboard panels and placed a Palestinian flag on top in a gesture of protest.
Settlers arrived at the scene and tried to stop the protesters.
Reuters video from the scene showed settlers attempting to set the structure on fire and burning a Palestinian flag. In further footage an Israeli settler is seen trying to prevent video being shot and spitting at the camera.
Scuffles ensued between the two groups, who were then dispersed by Israeli soldiers who fired tear gas and arrested five activists. An Israeli army spokesperson said that the area was declared a closed military zone.
Hebron is the second-largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, which Israel captured along with Gaza in the 1967 war. It is also home to several hundred hardline Jewish settlers whose tiny enclave abuts the Cave of the Patriarchs, a site holy to Muslims and Jews alike, and is closely guarded by Israeli forces.
Up to 29 Palestinians are believed to have died and 125 injured in the gun attack by Jewish settler Baruch Goldstein on Muslim worshippers in the mosque at the Machpelah Cave in 1994.
Some 650 Jewish settlers live in fortified enclaves guarded by Israeli troops in Hebron, a city of 180,000 Palestinians, and the city has long been a flashpoint. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
