- Story Text: Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney gave Manchester United a clinical 2-0 win at AS Roma on Tuesday (April 1) in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Manager Alex Ferguson admitted his delight at the result.
"Well this was a fantastic result for us. Probably another day I am going to start worrying about it (the return game). I think the first thing is to make sure that we prepare properly. We cannot take anything for granted in this game. We have to earn the right to be in the semifinal. An hopefully we can do that," Ferguson said.
Ferguson was also very pleased at the news that there had not been any clashes among the team's supporters.
"That's a bonus, that's a thing we all wanted to happen tonight. Both clubs Roma and ourselves worked hard to make sure that there would be no incidents and so we are pleased to hear that news,"United coach said.
Roma came away with nothing after doing the better work for long spells of the match.
" My first though is that I am sorry for this defeat particularly because of the result. The second goes to the disappointment of our fans because with such an enthusiasm and support which seen our defeat turned embarrassing. And we thank them," AS Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said.
Spalletti also said he was disappointed by his team's reaction following United's second goal.
"That (to give up after suffering the second goal) is for me an unacceptable behavior on behalf of my team. I will discuss this with them in depth because it is totally wrong," Spalletti said.
Spalletti also said that Manchester United rode its luck in winning the match.
"They (Manchester United) are all players that have been in great club and at very high level of competition and quality. But for what I have seen tonight also my team as shown personality, has made the game .Manchester United players showed skill and experience in taking advantage of situations but they have been very lucky tonight". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
