- Story Text: An Israeli bus carrying settlers ran over and killed a Palestinian shepherd near the West Bank city of Nablus on Monday (April 7), local Palestinian residents said.
The shepherd, 15-year old Sharid Shtayeh, was killed as he crossed a road near the Jewish settlement of Elon Moreh, near the Palestinian village of Salem.
Shtayeh was riding his donkey when the bus carrying the settlers to Elon Moreh slammed into his herd, killing him, his donkey and six sheep.
Angry Palestinians gathered on site and clashed with Israeli soldiers.
The Palestinians hurled stones at the troops who fired smoke grenades to disperse the crowd, witnesses said.
An Israeli police spokesman confirmed the shepherd was killed in what he called a road accident.
An Israeli ambulance crew pronounced him dead at the scene.
Residents of Salem, where Shtayeh lived, hurled stones at the bus passengers and Israeli soldiers who fired into the air to disperse the crowd, witnesses said.
Ahmad Jabour, a member of Salem's local council, said the shepherd was the third Palestinian killed in the area by Israeli drivers over the last 12 months. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
