- Story Text: U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday (April 21) urged the Libyan authorities to "stop fighting and stop killing people" and said the world body's priority was to secure a ceasefire.
"At this time our priority is to bring about a verifiable and effective ceasefire, and then we can expand our humanitarian assistance, and we are going to engage in political dialogue," Ban said during an official visit to the Russian capital.
"I urge the Libyan authorities to stop fighting and stop killing people," he said, speaking to reporters after visiting a centre for disabled children.
Ban said that more than half a million people had fled the Arab nation amid ongoing fighting between forces loyal to President Muammar Gaddafi and rebels.
Hundreds of people are thought to have been killed in the two months since the Libyan rebellion erupted, inspired by uprisings against autocratic rulers elsewhere in the Arab world, and the insurgents control only the east of the country from their Benghazi stronghold. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
