United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon congratulated President-elect Barack Obama on Wednesday (November 5, 2008) saying he looked forward to a new era of co-operation with the United States.
The Secretary-General said Senator Obama's election win was a historic opportunity, and that he hoped to meet the President-elect as soon as possible.
"On behalf of the United Nations and myself personally, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Senator Barack Obama as the next president of the United States," says Ban Ki-Moon.
Ban said he looked forward to a new era in the relationship between America and the United Nations, and welcomed the Democrat's commitment to open diplomatic dialogue with countries like Iran.
"He has expressed publicly that he is willing to meet anybody, any country, so that will provide a good opportunity not only for the United States, but the United Nations as a whole to resolve all the issues through dialogue," Ban said.
Highlighting the global financial crisis, climate change and the millennium goals as key issues, Ban said if there was ever a time the world should join together, it was now.
"I'm quite optimistic that we'll be able to have strengthened partnerships," he told reporters.
The U-N Secretary General said he would travel to Washington next week to attend the emergency financial summit of world leaders on November 15. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
