- Story Text: Hungarian Prime minister Viktor Orban says the future of Ukraine and Hungary are connected, as he meets with the Ukrainian leadership in Kiev.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban held talks with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on Friday (November 12) during his official visit to Ukraine.
Bilateral cooperation between the countries which share a common border was at the top of the agenda. Several major transport projects were discussed, including the construction of a broad railway line from Russia to Austria, which passes through Ukraine and Hungary.
"I am convinced that the future of Hungary and Ukraine are connected," said Orban at a joint news conference with Azarov.
He also underlined the need to deepen cooperation between the European Union and Ukraine.
"I want to stress that the European Union must expand and get stronger and it is possible only if we consider Ukraine," Orban said.
Hungary takes over the rotating European presidency in January 2011.
Orban also said that Hungary is prepared to invest money in the Carpathian region in Western Ukraine, where a large part of Ukraine's Hungarian minority live.
"The Carpathian region must be developed," he said.
He also suggested to ease the visa regime for the Ukrainian nationals.
"First of all we are not afraid of Ukrainians. Moreover many Hungarians live in Ukraine. I think that the visa regime doesn't make sense. In my opinion the visa regime will not stop bad people from doing bad things," Orban said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
