- Story Text: FIFA lifted on Thursday (May 27) a suspension against the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT), after a conflict between leaders within the organization and the Salvadoran government was settled.
FIFA suspended the federation a few weeks ago because Mauricio Funes' left-wing government failed to recognize a commission designated in July to sort out accounting issues a month after Rodrigo Calvo resigned in June 2009 as president of FESFUT.
FIFA notified FESFUT of its decision in a letter read by Reynaldo Vasquez, the current president of the country's federation.
"Early this morning we received a letter from FIFA and I'll read it: 'Dear President, we have taken note of the different measures taken by the Salvadoran authorities which has allowed FESFUT to comply with the requirements established by FIFA. In this way, we are happy to know that the legal capacity of FESFUT has been recognized by the authorities and that the new rules have been registered by the Interior Ministry. In the face of these new positive steps taken by the authorities, the case of FESFUT has been discussed by the emergency the committee who decided to lift the suspension immediately from today (Thursday),'" read Vasquez during a news conference.
After a series of negotiations between the Salvadoran government and FESFUT, the Interior Ministry authorized the federation and endorsed its rules in order to overcome FIFA's punishment, who had given the country until June 8 to clear up the conflict.
"As a consequence, FESFUT may take part in tournaments or regional and international competitions again," he added.
Salvadoran referees Joel Aguilar, William Torres and Juan Francisco Zumba will now be able to take part in the World Cup in South Africa to be played from June 11 to July. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
