- Story Text: Dozens of Palestinian youths clashed with Israeli troops on Qalandiya checkpoint and in the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Friday (November 29) after the funeral procession for 24-year-old Mahmoud Awwad.
Awwad had died after sustaining a bullet wound to the head on August 26 when an Israeli army raided the Qalandiya refugee camp and shot and killed three Palestinian men from the camp.
Medical officials said that he had been receiving treatment in an Israeli hospital after falling into a coma.
Israeli border police said they entered the camp, near Jerusalem, to arrest a man and were confronted by a crowd throwing fire bombs and rocks.
Israeli troops often enter Palestinian-controlled territory to detain people suspected of planning attacks, usually conducting the raids during darkness to minimize confrontation.
During clashes in Qalandiya and in the West Bank city of Hebron, two main flashpoints of violence, Palestinian youths threw stones and burnt tyres while the Israeli army fired rubber bullets and tear gas canisters.
Violence in the West Bank has worsened since the beginning of 2013. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
