- Story Text: U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited Tacloban City on Saturday (December 21) and told survivors not to despair.
Ban arrived into the flattened city, the capital of Leyte province which bore the brunt of Typhoon Haiyan, on a small plane.
He travelled to a devastated village to meet survivors and visited a damaged public school, handing out school bags to children.
He told residents not to despair that they had the world's support.
"My message to Filipinos that never despair, the United Nations is behind you , our world is behind you. We will mobilise all resources and will to help you. We are very much grateful. This, you cannot do alone, maybe United Nations cannot do alone, we need all the support from all the member states. Your neighbours, your neighbouring countries and the world," he said.
Earlier on Saturday, Ban met President Benigno Aquino for a meeting which touched on rehabilitation and recovery plans for the typhoon victims in the central Philippines.
Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest ever to hit land, wiped out almost everything in its path when it crossed the central Philippines last month, killing at least 6,069 people, and leaving nearly 1,800 missing and 4 million with partially or totally damaged homes.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), has announced plans to raise $791 million to fund direct assistance to typhoon victims via food aid, shelter, and access to water, health and sanitation services. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
