- Story Text: U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Philippine President Benigno Aquino in Manila on Saturday (December 21).
Aquino and Ban held a closed door meeting at the Presidential Palace, with discussions expected to centre on relief and rehabilitation efforts for the typhoon victims in the central Philippines.
Ban was scheduled to fly to Tacloban City later on Saturday, the capital of Leyte province that bore the brunt of typhoon.
Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest ever to hit land, wiped out almost everything in its path when it crossed the central Philippines last month, killing at least 6,069 people, and leaving nearly 1,800 missing and 4 million with partially or totally damaged homes.
Power has been restored to less than one per cent of Tacloban City, while city administrators have said an average of 25 bodies are pulled from the rubble each day.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), has announced plans to raise $791 million to fund direct assistance to typhoon victims via food aid, shelter, and access to water, health and sanitation services. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
