- Story Text: Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Beijing on Wednesday (July 18).
Ban is in the Chinese capital to attend the opening of a China-Africa forum that kicks off on Thursday (July 19).
He is expected to press Chinese leaders to back tougher action to stop violence in Syria.
The 15-strong Security Council is due to vote on a new Syria resolution on Wednesday to prevent the mandate of a U.N. monitoring mission in Syria from expiring.
Russia and China, which have twice vetoed resolutions condemning Damascus for its assault on the opposition, and against imposing sanctions on the country, have indicated they want the U.N. mission to remain in place as is.
Ban is also scheduled to have talks with China's Vice President and leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping later in the day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
