- Story Text: Raoul Weil, a 54-year-old Swiss citizen and former head of global wealth management at UBS, walked out of U.S. Federal Court in Florida on Tuesday (January 7) after pleading not guilty to charges that he helped about 17,000 Americans conceal approximately $20 billion in numbered accounts at the bank.
He initially disputed the charges and was declared a fugitive a few months later but was arrested on a warrant from Interpol in mid-October while on vacation in Bologna, Italy. Weil's lead attorney Aaron Marcu says he looks forward to a trial.
"Mr. Weil pleaded not guilty today and demanded a trial by jury. We look forward to coming back to court and defending him when we have a trial date," he said outside the court after a short 15 minute arraignment hearing.
Weil's appearance in federal court in Fort Lauderdale is his second since he was extradited from Italy last month. He was granted a $10.5 million bond pending his arraignment, when he appeared in shackles and a gray prison jumpsuit on December 16.
If convicted, Weil faces up to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit tax fraud. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
