- Story Text: Palestinian children scuffled with Israeli soldiers near an Israeli army roadblock in the divided city of Hebron on Wednesday (November 30) in protest against the use of electronic gates to guard Jewish settlers in the divided city. Scuffles broke out between the children and the soldiers. It was one of several such incidents in past weeks. The Israeli army has imposed stricter security measures in the city, placing electronic gates in areas close to Jewish enclaves to prevent clashes between the two groups. Palestinian school children said the gates hinder their movement and infringe upon their rights. There are approximately 600 Jewish settlers living in the heart of Hebron. The nearby settlement of Kiryat Arba, located about one-tenth of a kilometre (mile) from the centre of Hebron has a population of approximately 6,500 settlers. Hebron has been a flashpoint of violence between settlers and Palestinians. The conflict between the two groups reached a climax in 1994 when an Israeli settler entered the Ibrahimi Mosque, the Muslim portion of the Tomb of the Patriarchs complex, and opened fire on Muslim men at Friday prayers, killing 29 and wounding hundreds more. Earlier in Nablus, the Israeli Army carried out a raid, surrounding a house where it said Palestinian militants were hiding. The standoff between the suspected militants and the Israeli army continued as clashes raged in downtown Nablus later on Wednesday (November 30) morning. Israeli Army jeeps were pummelled with stones as local Palestinians youths tried to force them to leave the area. Israeli soldiers returned fire with rubber bullets and medics reported that at least three Palestinian youths had been injured in the confrontation. Similar clashes have taken place in Nablus in recent weeks as part of Israel's campaign to clamp down on militant activity in the West Bank.
