- Story Text: Israeli soldiers shot and critically wounded a 13-year-old Palestinian carrying a toy weapon in the occupied West Bank on Thursday (November 3). The Israeli army said troops had mistaken him for a gunman.
The shooting, during an Israeli raid to detain suspected Palestinian militants, came amid the worst surge of violence since a truce was agreed nine months ago.
The Israeli army said soldiers in Jenin refugee camp came under fire from Palestinian gunmen in several locations.
Palestinian medics said the youngster sustained a head wound and was transferred to an Israeli hospital for treatment.
Palestinian officials have said Israel's frequent raids in West Bank towns and villages to arrest suspected militants hurt chances of resuming peacemaking stalled by more than five years of violence.
A Palestinian security source said troops left Jenin refugee camp after detaining three policemen. The Israeli army later said the three men were released.
In other violence, a mortar bomb fired by Palestinian militants in Gaza lightly wounded a soldier in southern Israel, the army said.
Israeli troops have killed 16 Palestinians, most of them militants, in airstrikes and raids following rocket fire from Gaza and a suicide bombing in Israel last week that killed 5 people. Gunmen killed a soldier in the West Bank on Wednesday.
Israel demands that the Palestinian Authority disarm militants. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas prefers to negotiate with gunmen, fearing forced disarmament could lead to civil war. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
