As we explained to the students, community responsibility is the backbone of corporations, and the corporation that does not demonstrate community responsibility will lose its share of the market sooner than later. God willing, we will have a large role and will continue to raise our voice louder and louder, until we develop the understanding of community responsibility." - Story Text: A joint project held by the Palestinian Center for Environment (CEP), The American Consulate General in Jerusalem and the Environment Quality Authority (EQA) has come to an end with an Earth Day exhibition in Ramallah in the West Bank.
For several months, groups of university graduates and students attended seminars by speakers and trainers from the private and public sectors in the West Bank cities of Nablus, Hebron and Ramallah, with the aim of coming up with innovative environmentally sensitive projects and businesses.
The training culminated in an exhibition on Earth Day that brought Palestinians from all parts of the West Bank together.
'Down To Earth,' included the first Environmental Projects bazaar, which was attended by Palestinian Minister of Agriculture as well as United States diplomats, including the Consul General of Jerusalem.
Students got a chance to pitch their project or business proposal at the exhibition.
"As we explained to the students, community responsibility is the backbone of corporations, and the corporation that does not demonstrate community responsibility will lose its share of the market sooner or later," Imad Allaham, from the Palestinian telecommunication group, said at one of the sessions in Ramallah.
At the closing conference, the deputy chairman of the Environmental Quality Authority, Jameel Mtour told the audience that these projects, while small serve the community in raising awareness of larger environmental concerns.
"These activities and creations that have been and are being launched by the new creative graduates truly contributes in delivering parts of the Palestinian environmental message, which aims to protect nature and to minimise pollution," Mtour said.
The audience and students at the final event were invited to vote for the best project pitched by those who attended the training.
The American Consulate General launched the first ever Environmental Projects Bazaar, which was an opportunity for a number of Palestinian charities and organisations to display their organic food and environment-friendly projects.
Richard Duagan, Public Affairs Affairs officer at the United States Consulate in Jerusalem said the exhibition was beautiful and was an opportunity to not just to highlight environmental protection, but also U.S. respect for Palestinian culture and Palestinian businesses.
The top ten projects that receive the most votes will be helped by the organisers to apply for funding and possible sponsorship so that they can be brought to realisation.
