- Story Text: Several hundred Palestinians and peace activists
clashed with Israeli troops on Friday (December 23) during
a protest against the construction of a West Bank
separation barrier in the village of Beilin.
The Israeli army said the protesters violated a
military order declaring the area a military zone and that
some protesters hurled stones at the soldiers who replied
by firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Witnesses said one of the protesters whose broken hand
was kept in a cast, was beaten by Israeli policemen and
evacuated for further treatment.
Beilin has been a flashpoint for clashes between
Israeli troops and protesters in recent months attempting
to block heavy machinery from constructing the barrier
Israel says it needs to keep out Palestinian militants but
in which Palestinians see an attempt to annex land they
want for a future independent state.
On Thursday evening (December 22) Israeli soldiers
dismantled a caravan and evacuated several dozen protesters
who barricaded themselves in an outpost meant to prevent
the construction of the fence which cut off their land.
Palestinians say the project effectively annexes over
40 per cent of the West Bank and directly effects the lives
of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
Israel has already erected large portions of its
barrier inside the West Bank including east Jerusalem,
isolating Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank.
The International Court of Justice said the barrier,
being built on land Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East
war, is illegal and contrary to international law. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
