- Story Text: Palestinians mourned on Friday (May 16) the death of two men killed by Israeli forces during a stone-throwing protest.
Hundreds joined Friday prayers held outdoors, and a funeral procession for the deceased.
Israeli police shot dead 22-year old Abu Thahr, and 17-year old Nadim Nuwara, in a demonstration on Thursday (May 15) commemorating the "Nakba", or what Palestinians term "the catastrophe" of Israel's founding in 1948.
Hospital officials said the two men were both shot in the heart outside Israel's Ofer Prison, near the Palestinian city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli military declined to comment, saying border police were involved in the incident. A police spokesman told Reuters he was aware of the protest, but did not have any confirmation that live ammunition was used.
In Ofer, where the shootings happened, Israeli forces used tear gas to disperse a few dozen Palestinian demonstrators who were throwing stones on Friday.
Ofer prison has been a focal point of Palestinian anger over Israel's detention and occupation policies.
Protests and violence in the West Bank have declined in recent months, while U.S.-brokered Israeli-Palestinian peace talks stumbled and finally collapsed in April.
