- Story Text: Palestinians held a funeral Wednesday (June 4) for a man shot dead on Tuesday (June 3) by Israeli troops who said he opened fire and wounded a soldier at a West Bank checkpoint.
A large crowd turned out in the town of Huwara near Nablus in the West Bank, where a funeral procession carried the body of Alaa Odeh, wrapped in a Palestinian flag, to a mosque, to perform funeral rites.
Nearby, women mourners wept as traditional Islamic prayers were completed.
Later, mourners unfurled a huge Palestinian flag and carried it above their heads as the body was led toward its final resting place.
The Palestinian mainstream Fatah group said Odeh was a 30-year-old mobile phone shop owner, and along with relatives of the deceased accused Israeli soldiers of killing him in cold blood.
In a statement, the military said "a Palestinian gunman opened fire and wounded a border policemen, and the force returned fire, killing the perpetrator."
It added that the attacker had fired six shots, and a pistol was found on the ground. Odeh's family was quoted as saying in media reports that he was at the checkpoint awaiting a delivery of phones.
The shooting occurred at the same checkpoint where a few days previously troops arrested a Palestinian who the military said was wearing an explosives belt.
Close to the Palestinian town of Betuniya in the West Bank, Palestinian youths clashed with Israeli troops outside the Ofer prison camp where some Palestinian prisoners are on hunger strike protesting against detainment without trial.
Israeli military forces fired tear gas and stun grenades in response to Palestinian youth who threw stones.
U.S.-led peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians collapsed in April and some analysts have warned of a possible spike in violence given the lack of any clear way forward to resolve the generations-old conflict. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
