Palestinian radio station 24fm launched a mobile unit on Wednesday (December 17) to reach out to more people.
Called 'Officials on Wheels2 in English, and 'Your voice heard' in Arabic, the community radio service aims to promote dialogue between residents and officials.
"The aim is to connect between the official; who will be inside this car, he will visit various locations; and the residents. They will be in a tour with him inside the car," said Luna Erekat, Director General of non-governmental organisation Palestinian Vision, which is helping the mobile project.
"There will be a live interview with the official. We will discuss social issues, and help to ease their daily life, and to build a bridge in order to find solutions for problems in various areas," she said.
The mobile radio station will tour Palestinian cities and villages to give people the opportunity to discuss their problems with officials, who will drive through neighbourhoods.
Based in Ramallah, 24fm was launched on January 24.
The station's head says the mobile unit helps them overcome obstacles posed by poor Internet connectivity.
Until now, Israel has not allowed Palestinians access to 3G mobile technology, citing security concerns, rendering many smartphone apps largely useless.
Palestinian officials blame the problem on what they say is Israel's control of Palestinian networks. Israeli officials failed to provide an immediate response when asked who controls mobile networks and frequencies in the West Bank and Gaza.
Ehab Al-Jariri, the head of 24 FM, said that the lack of the 3G service on smartphones makes it difficult for Palestinians to access the Internet while on the move.
"Until now, we don't have 3G in the Palestinian territories and we also can't have Thuraya mobiles inside the Palestinian territories. These are obstacles for our radio station to be aired in some areas. We also need special Internet power because we broadcast through a link online. The other option is to use satellites which is expensive for us," he said.
Jariri said that mobile station will also broadcast live, reaching out to more than 70 villages, camps and towns. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
