- Story Text: The first batch of German troops and equipment have
arrived in Albania for deployment as part of NATO's
humanitarian assistance effort, while the German defence
minister has been visiting German troops stationed in
Macedonia.
German troops and military equipment arrived at the
Albanian port of Durres on Monday (May 24).A German officer
said the troops were there to assist with NATO's efforts to
deal with the humanitarian crisis in the country resulting
from the influx of refugees from neighbouring Kosovo.Major
Grothschalk said a total of 600 German troops were expected.
They arrived on the day British Defence Secretary George
Robertson said NATO troops would escort refugees back to their
homes in Kosovo with or without the agreement of Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic.
Also on Monday, German Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping
reviewed German troops serving with NATO in northern
Macedonia.Scharping arrived in the Macedonian capital,
Skopje, on Sunday (May 23) and was taken by helicopter to
Tetovar on Monday (May 24), where 1,500 German troops have
been stationed since December.
