Asia beat Europe by seven matches to two in a two-day badminton tournament in Bangkok on September 26 and 27. On the first day, Asia won all four matches. Japan's top woman player Sumiko Kitada took only 15 minutes to get Asia away to a flying start, defeating Christine Magnusson of Sweden 11-14, 11-5 in the women's singles. Kitada used a devastating smash and a powerful backhand to demolish Magnusson, a semi-finalist in the 1986 European Championships. Malaysia's Rashid Sidek outplayed IB Frederiksen of Denmark 17-14, 17-16 to take the men's singles in a 45-minute duel with a combination of dainty drop shots and accurate drives. South Korea's Maung Hee and Hwang He Young defeated England's Gillian Gowers and Gillian Clark 7-15, 15-4, 15-9 in the women's doubles. Then, in the men's doubles, Park Joo Bong and Kim Moon Soo, also of South Korea, beat Steen Fladberg and Jan Paulsen of Denmark 15-9, 15-9. On the second day, Asia extended their lead when, in the mixed doubles, the South Korean team of Park Joo Bong and Chung Maung Hee beat the Danish/English combination of Steen Fladberg and Gillian Gowers 15-5, 18-16. In the men's singles, England's Darren Hall beat Thailand's Sompol Kukasemkij 18-14, 15-13, while Denmark's Morten Frost Hansen beat Indonesia's Louk Sugiarto 5-15, 15-13 after Sugiarto retired from the game.
