- Story Text: NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) military exercises continued in Albania on Wednesday as fresh clashes broke out in the neighbouring province of Kosovo.
Exercises continued on Wednesday (August 19) with Italian NATO troops performing search and rescue exercises in the Adriatic sea off the coast of Tirana in Albania.
The 14 NATO and associated members have been engaged in a number of exercises that were used in a real life crisis situation in Bosnia.
NATO Commander for Allied Forces Southern Europe Daniel Murphy said the exercises showed the alliance's readiness to respond if needed to intervene in a conflict.
He said they also expressed NATO's interest in the region.
As NATO continued its show of power there were reports on Wednesday of fresh clashes erupting in the neighbouring province of Kosovo between Serb security forces and KLA members.
Albanian officials have made clear they see the exercises, which began on Tuesday as a direct warning to the Serbian government to soften its approach on Kosovo.
Some 1,700 troops from 14 NATO and Partnership for Peace countries and about 60 aircraft and helicopters are taking part.
The alliance plans similar exercises in Macedonia.
