- Story Text: After a brief respite in the poor weather, recent rain falls have worsened the flooding in areas in southern Albania, leaving roads, farms and houses part-submerged.
Floodwaters have hit farmers, animal breeders and homeowners, who now say they are seeking government help to cope with their property losses.
"My house will collapse, three of the main walls are under water, we want help. Help us, because our house is going to crumble," one local inhabitant, Fize Zogu, said.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Sunday (February 8) promised full compensation to the flood affected inhabitants, local media reported.
"We plead to the government to help us. Our [crop] production is finished, the fields could be as much as 2 metres under water. This year is dead in terms of agriculture," local farmer Misir Tafa said.
The Albanian army has moved its personnel and equipment to aid the local inhabitants and trucks are delivering food, blankets and animal feed in the flooded regions.
Flash floods killed a woman in Albania on Friday (February 6), while in the south of the country the Vjosa River has flooded 18,000 hectares of land and killed thousands of cattle, when waters were rose again after briefly receding.
In the past years it was the North of the country who was frequently flooded, especially the Shkodra region.
Local media has reported that on Saturday (February 7), the hydro plant dams started to discharge the excessive water which in the past has caused flooding.
If the rainfall continues it is inevitable that the North will be affected too, as authorities have to discharge water to protect the dams.
The floods are Albania's second worst on record, with only the floods in 1971 causing wider-spread and more severe damage. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
