- Story Text: Mrs Betty Ambatielos - British-born wife of Antonios Ambatielos, the convicted Greek seamen's leader - met her husband at Aegina island prison, Feb. 23. Detained there for the past 14 years under a military court's life sentence on charges of subversive activities, he had not seen his wife for four years.
Mrs Ambatielos reached the island from Piraeus, aboard the small coaster "Saronis", accompanied by relatives of other prisoners, including the wife of Manoli Glezos. After half an hour's walk up to the prison, Mrs Ambatielos - who had brought flowers and a parcel of clothes - saw her husband alone in the presence of a warden.
Another visit was arranged for the following day. Mrs Ambatielos said her husband's health was deteriorating. She plans to discuss with him and his lawyer a plea to the Ministry of Justice to release him. She said she would avail herself of special legislation existing in Greece authorising the release of prisoners in ill health.
