- Story Text: New Bank notes printed by The Reserve Bank of Rhodesia have already gone into circulation in Salisbury. The Governor of the bank said last night (Wednesday) that he did not believe Britain could prevent the country spending the new bank notes outside Rhodesia.
Before Rhodesia's declaration of unilateral independence in 1965, Rhodesian currency was printed in Great Britain.
A firm in Munich then took over the job, until Britain blocked delivery of the notes. Now there have been reports that the machines used for this latest issue were flown secretly in pieces from West Germany.
New GBP1 notes are already being passed over the counters of Salisbury banks, and new GBP5 and 10 shilling notes are expected to go into circulation before the end of the year.
The Reserve Bank Governor, Mr. N. H. Bruce, said last night: "We can use our notes to pay debts in this country and to purchase goods.
"Also, if they are negotiated by any bank outside our borders, we will accept these notes when repatriated to Rhodesia, and will effect payment for them at rates of exchange which have been current so far as Rhodesian notes have been concerned over a period of some considerable length."
