- Story Text: One ethnic Albanian sniper died and two others were
wounded after an exchange of fire with NATO-led peacekeepers
in the Kosovo flashpoint town of Mitrovica on Sunday (February
13).
A KFOR spokesman said on Sunday (February 13) that the
three snipers were captured by KFOR and that one of them later
died from his wounds at a hospital.
The spokesman said the three snipers were Albanian.
He said the two wounded had been treated and were under
guard at the hospital. The situation in the town was now
quiet, he said.
Earlier on Sunday (February 13), KFOR said two French
peacekeepers were wounded by sniper fire as fighting erupted
in the town divided between mutually hostile ethnic Albanians
and Serbs.
Machinegun and small-arms fire punctuated by explosions
raged for about two hours near the bank of the river that
splits Mitrovica into Serb- and Albanian-dominated sectors,
defined by the Ibar River running through town.
French members of the NATO-led KFOR peacekeeping force on
foot and in armoured personnel carriers took up combat
positions on the north side of Mitrovica, where Serbs
predominate.
At one point, French KFOR troops surrounded a house on the
Serbian side of Mitrovica as a KFOR helicopter hovered
overhead.Plumes of smoke rose from burning houses.
As/French KFOR troops attempted to flush out the snipers
Danish and Italian KFOR troops stood watch near the bridge
itself.
