- Story Text: Opposition parties in Yugoslavia have been banned from
collecting signatures on the streets of the capital Belgrade
calling for President Slobodan Milosevic to resign.
Anti-government supporters set themselves up at more
than 20 locations in Belgrade on Monday (July 12).
And there were many people quick to sign up to the
"Milosevic resign" campaign.
But within half an hour police ordered the organisers to
stop collecting signatures or they would be arrested.
By then around 3,000 people had already signed the
petition calling on the Yugoslav President to quit office.
The Alliance for Change, an umbrellla opposition
organisation which includes the Democratic Party and trade
unions, has vowed to continue its campaign. The chorus of
calls for Milosevic to go has grown louder since 11 weeks of
NATO bombs devastated the country.
Activists have been detained in various cities around the
country over the past few weeks for collecting signatures on
the petition and for organising rallies.
