- Story Text: A team of German experts on Monday (September 12) repacked a consignment of decomposing toxic pesticides sent to Albania two years ago, and prepared them for shipment back to Germany.
The operation is to ensure the safe return to Germany of some 465 tonnes of pesticides originating in former East Germany and stored in railway wagons or warehouses in Bajza, near Shkodra, northern Albania, and Milot, 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Tirana.
"We must first seal them in new containers which we shall then transport to the port of Durres for shipment to Hamburg and then on to special incinerating plants," Thomas Hauthal, leader of the group of experts in Milot, told Reuters.
The operation will cost 9.6 million marks (6 million U.S.
dollars) and is fully financed by the German government. It is expected to be completed by November, Hauthal said. The German consignment, however, consisted of pesticides from former East Germany which were barred in European Union countries or expired, and packed in barrels which began leaking.
The rest of the EU consignment has been found to be in order, Albanian environment officials said.
Germany at first refused to take the pesticides back, but later relented under pressure from Albania and from German environmentalists.
