- Story Text: INTRO: Albanian social services have distributed emergency food aid to a home for mentally handicapped children in Tirana as European Union and Albanian officials hammered out plans for increased humanitarian aid to the Balkan nation.
Two months worth of pasta, milk powder and high protein biscuits was donated to the home by French humanitarian organisations and the Albanian Red Cross.
It was collected on Thursday (March 27) from a distribution centre in Lunerz, 10 kms south of Tirana, by the homes director Mimosa Gurabardhi. "Small amounts of aid are being given to all public care institutions but we will need a lot more" she said.
Hospitals, old peoples homes and orphanages in Albania are in urgent need of medical and food aid following widespread looting and social unrest in the country earlier this month.
A European delegation met on Thursday morning with the Albanian Prime Minister Bashkim Fino to discuss Albania's appeal for international help.
The international community remains undecided on the structure of a security force to protect humanitarian aid from armed gangs which control much of Albania.
The security risks in Albania were highlighted on Wednesday night when unidentified gunmen sprayed a crowded public bus with gunfire near the capital, killing at least one person and injuring scores more.
One of the wounded, a six-year-old named Iris Hysmeta, lay in a critical condition on Thursday in a poorly equipped military hospital where doctors say supplies are diminishing rapidly.
