- Story Text: Nearly 5,000 ethnic Albanians have been hiding from Serb forces in the Kosovo mountains near Albania for four months. They believe they have been forgotten by the outside world.
The refugees said on Friday (August 21) that they were forced out of their villages during an offensive by Serb forces and the first outsiders they had seen since then were the Reuters crew who filmed them.
The mountains hid them, but also brought rain and misery for those without a home. With temperatures plummeting at night as winter draws near, the conditions will become barely tolerable.
The tractors that carried the ethnic Albanians from their burnt out villages were turned into makeshift shelters.Straw on the cart and polythene sheeting thrown over the top provided the only warmth and protection against the elements.
At a primitive school near Pec, around 40 people were sharing three small classrooms -- their beds a pile of straw on the hard floor.
One refugee, Isuf Gradina, said that people were sleeping rough and did not have proper food, so as winter approached many would die of hunger and the cold.
There is also the increasing threat of disease, with children suffering from severe dehydration and others drinking water straight from the rivers, which could cause life-threatening diseases.
