- Story Text: Israeli missile strikes Palestinian car in Jenin.
An Israeli aircraft fired a missile at a West Bank
car on Monday (September 13) killing a leader of a militant
group linked to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah
faction and two comrades, witnesses said.
They added that three men were in the car when it was
attacked in the centre of the northern West Bank city of
Jenin, and all were killed while several passersby were
wounded.
Initially witnesses said there were four people in the
car but one, who was among the wounded, turned out to be a
passerby.
Palestinians said the dead men were members of al-Aqsa
Martyrs Brigades, a Fatah-linked armed group involved in a
four-year-old uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
One of the dead men was the deputy Brigades leader in
Jenin, Mahmoud Abu Khalifeh, witnesses and medics said.
Militants gathered outside Jenin hospital shortly after
the attack, and fired guns into the air in protest,
witnesses said.
The witnesses said the missile was launched by an
Israeli aircraft, possibly a drone. The army declined
comment.
Israel frequently kills militants in targeted aerial
attacks in the Palestinian territories.
The move was swiftly condemned by the Palestinian
Authority.
Palestinian Employment Minister Ghassan Khatib said
Israel would be held responsible not only for the day's
casualties but any possible reactions.
"Israel has to learn that the only way out of this
vicious circle of violence is resorting to peace
negotiations on the basis of the international legality
instead of resorting to violence and killing because
violence can only bring violence," Khatib said.
Israeli spokespeople refused to comment on the strike.
