- Story Text: Settlers scuffle with army over removal of outpost.
Israeli soldiers dismantled an illegal outpost
near the West Bank city of Hebron on Wednesday (March 31),
after the Supreme Court removed an injunction paving the
way for uprooting banned Jewish settler outposts.
The Hazon David outpost was expected to be the first of
a handful of outposts dismantled by the army ahead of Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon's trip to Washington in mid-April
where he hopes to win U.S. backing for a unilateral
go-it-alone plan.
Last week, the Supreme Court rejected a petition by
settlement groups to overturn a government decision to
uproot outposts, in a ruling that set aside legal
challenges stalling plans to tear down more of the hilltop
trailer enclaves.
Settlers tried to prevent troops from dismantling the
caravan, but troops managed to remove the caravan which
was set up near the worshippers' pathway in Hebron -- a
city that has been a flashpoint of violence since the start
of a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.
