- Story Text: 14-year old boy caught with explosive belt at
checkpoint in the West Bank.
Israeli troops on Wednesday (March 24, 2004) arrested a
14-year-old Palestinian would-be suicide bomber at a West
Bank checkpoint after he was surrounded and failed to
detonate his explosives belt, the army said.
The incident at Hawara checkpoint came nine days after
a 12-year-old Palestinian boy was detained there on
suspicion of trying to smuggle a bomb, and amid militant
vows to avenge
Israel's assassination of the Hamas spiritual founder on
Monday (March 22).
The Israeli commander at Hawara said Wednesday's arrest
came after troops noticed the 14-year-old acting
suspiciously.
He said a bomb had been defused by a remote-controlled
robot and that the suspect was being questioned.
Palestinian witnesses at Hawara saw a youth being taken
into custody.
He also said it was not clear who had dispatched the
alleged would-be bomber. There was no immediate comment
from Palestinian militant groups waging a more than
three-year-old uprising.
Israeli spokesperson Sharon Feingold said, "It is not
the first time the Palestinians have been using men women
and children, especially women and children and relying on
their kindness and humanitarian of our soldiers. In the
past, soldiers called this checkpoint the checkpoint of
compassion and they do that because they use and abuse our
soldiers' soft hearts and it has nothing to do with the
events of the past few days."
Islamic militant group Hamas has led calls for
stepped-up attacks against the Jewish state since its
founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was assassinated in an
Israeli air strike on Monday.
Israel had accused Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed wing in
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah
faction, of slipping a bomb into the bag carried by the
12-year-old boy detained at Hawara on March 15. The Brigades
denied involvement.
