- Story Text: Palestinian President Yasser Arafat gave a candle-lit
interview at his ruined West Bank headquarters where he
appealed to the world to end what he said was an assault by
Israel on his people.
The Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat spoke to a Reuters
Television crew on Saturday (March 30) at his headquarters
hours after the U.N. Security Council called for Israel to
withdraw from Ramallah and other Palestinian-ruled cities.
Arafat aides said Israeli troops deployed inside his
compound had cut telephone lines and supplies of water and
electricity. The cellphone network was also disrupted in an
apparent effort to isolate him from the outside world.
The interview had to be conducted by candlelight.
Israeli forces have said they are just a door away from
Arafat's private office.
"These are courageous people as they face this racism and
this terrorism, this aggression -- using all these American
weapons. And I tell these people that together we will
continue until one of our children puts the flag of Palestine
on top of the walls of Jerusalem and the Holy places of
Jerusalem."
He then appealed to the world community to persuade Israel
to end its assault on Palestinian cities.
"I am appealing to the whole international world to stop
this aggression against our people this military escalation
day by night - this killing - this even .. what our women have
faced who have been prevented to go to the hospitals and they
were obliged to deliver their sons .. some of them they had at
the checkpoints .. can you believe it? Would it have been done
all over the world?" Arafat said.
"It seems so... They are declaring that they (Israelis)
will continue their military escalation and they had more and
more plans against our people," Arafat said.
Israeli tanks blasted their way into Arafat's base on
Friday in response to a suicide bombing which killed 22
Israelis. Sharon said Israel viewed Arafat as an "enemy".
Israel's treatment of the Palestinian president has drawn
fierce international condemnation and dented hopes raised by
an Arab summit's endorsement this week of a Middle East peace
plan.
