- Story Text: Solana meets with Palestinian officials on visit to
Ramallah.
European Union Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana
met with Palestinian officials in the West Bank city of
Ramallah on Wednesday (July 13, 2005), one day after
a deadly suicide bomb attack on a shopping mall in the
Israeli coastal town of Netanya.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie condemned the
suicide bombing saying that such acts were against the
interests of Palestinians.
"These acts are against the Palestinian people. We
reaffirm to our friend Solana and we reaffirm to you and to
the entire world that we condemn strongly such actions,"
Qurie said during a joint news conference in Ramallah.
Solana also condemned the bombing saying that it was an
act both against Israel and against the Palestinian people
by those who are seeking to derail the peace process.
"I think that it was not an act only against two people
from Israel, it was also an act against the Palestinian
authorities and I think the Palestinian Authority taken
good note of that. The people who did that criminal act are
people who don't want disengagement to take place who don't
want the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian people
to be free and they are not part of the process in which
the majority of the people of goodwill, the majority of the
people in the international community are engaged," Solana
said.
The bombing on Tuesday (July 12), which killed two teenage
girls and two women outside a shopping mall in the
coastal city of Netanya, drew a swift Israeli military
response.
Returning to a city it had handed over to Palestinian
security control four months ago, the Israeli army swept
into Tulkarm in an offensive it said would last several
days.
Solana later met with Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas, who, on Tuesday evening (July 12), also condemned
what he called an "idiotic" suicide bombing and warned that
those responsible would be punished.
Abbas told reporters that it was a crime against the
Palestinian people and those who were behind it were
working against the Palestinian people's interest and must
be punished.
Solana met earlier in the week with Israeli officials
hoping to encourage an upcoming Israeli withdrawal from the
Gaza Strip - a move now endangered by the fresh flare-up of
violence.
