- Story Text: Orthodox worshippers gather at Bethlehem Church of
Nativity to celebrate Easter Good Friday.
Worshippers gathered at Bethlehem's Church of
Nativity to take part in Christian Orthodox Good Friday
mass (April 29).
Tens of local Christians and pilgrims gathered at the
Church of Nativity to celebrate Easter, which remembers the
death and rising of Jesus. Orthodox Good Friday is to
commemorate the day when the Orthodox Church believes Jesus
was crucified.
After the inside prayers were over, the worshippers took
to the streets of Bethlehem, where they carried an icon of
the cross and flags in a procession surrounding the church.
The last phase of the ceremony was the returning of the
procession into the church, where worshippers walked under
a rug held by priests.
Easter ceremonies are practised in eastern Orthodox
churches, Anglican churches, Roman Catholic churches, and
all major Protestant denominations, but on different dates.
Easter for the Orthodox is celebrated in accordance to
the eastern calendar which is the traditional date of the
annual celebration of Jesus' resurrection.
The aim of the Easter Dating Method is to maintain, for
each Easter Sunday, the same season of the year and the
same relationship to the preceding astronomical full moon
that occurred at the time of his resurrection in 30 A.D.
