- Story Text: Poles pray for the recovery of the Pope's health.
Across Poland thousands are praying for the health
of Pope John Paul II.
In the Polish city of Krakow, which is close to the
Pope's birthplace, Wadowice, candles were lit and prayers
recited at special masses on Friday (February 25). At St
Francis church, where Pope John Paul was a priest during
World War II, members of the congregation wished him a
speedy recovery.
"We are counting on it that he will still come (to
Poland). I would like Anrsha to see him," said one man, who
said he hoped his daughter would one day be able to see the
Pope in Poland.
An elderly member of the congregation recounted her
memories of the Pope after a special mass.
"My personal memory is that my mother came to this
church, she is even in a picture with him (the Pope) so
it's the a most important memento for me," she told Reuters.
In the mountain resort of Zakopane, long favoured by the
Pope for holidays, a special mass was held on Friday
(February 25) afternoon. "Our hearts sank when we found out about
t
his sad news,
that our Pope is in hospital. But as soon as we could, we
gathered in this Sanctuary and we will pray as long as we
can. All of us Highlanders here will pray, so that he will
get better. And I think he will get better, " said one
resident.
Worshippers from across the city wore traditional
clothes to the Mass, singing hymns to the accompaniment of
traditional instruments.
Doctors performed a tracheotomy on the Pope Thursday
evening (February 24), creating a hole in his throat to
prevent him from choking and allowing air to flow directly
to his lungs.
The Pope spent a restful night in hospital overnight
Thursday-Friday and was breathing unassisted but doctors
advised him not to speak for several days, the Vatican said
in its latest bulletin on Friday.
The 84-year-old was taken to a Rome hospital for the
second time this month on Thursday with a relapse of
influenza.
