- Story Text: Protestors arrested during clashes at West Bank
barrier.
Scuffles erupted between Israeli troops and
protesters on Tuesday (September 28) during a protest
against the Israeli West Bank barrier on the 4th
anniversary of a Palestinian uprising against Israel.
Hundreds of Israeli peace activists and Palestinian
villagers protested near the controversial barrier being
erected near the West Bank village.
The activists, protesting against the internationally
condemned separation barrier, marched from the nearby
village of Budrus to the wall, where they scuffled with
Israeli soldiers armed with bats.
Israeli troops began beating the protesters with bats
after detaining them for a short while. At least one
Palestinian protester was taken for further questioning.
Palestinians say the barrier annexes land they seek for
a future state.
Israel says it needs the controversial barrier to
prevent Palestinians from carrying out attacks in its
cities.
Following a series of hearings, the International Court
of Justice (ICJ) in Hague announced in a non-binding
declaration earlier this year that the barrier is illegal.
