- Story Text: Funeral held today for the correspondent from
Al-Arabiya killed in Baghdad on September 12.
Several thousand people turned out in the West Bank
city of Hebron on Tuesday for the funeral of Mazen Tomeizi,
a Palestinian producer for the Dubai-based al Arabiya news
channel and for Saudi Arabian TV channel Ikhbariya, who was
killed in central Baghdad while filming clashes between
Iraqi insurgents and U.S. forces.
Tomeizi was buried as a martyr, his body swathed in a
white shroud and carried through the streets of the
southern West Bank city. Carried by six pall bearers, the
crowd chanted 'God is Great' and waving Palestinian and
Iraqi flags.
Witnesses said the 26-year-old was killed when a U.S.
helicopter fired into a crowd of Iraqis cheering around a
military vehicle torched during fighting in Haifa street,
an area notorious as a stronghold for anti-U.S. guerrillas.
An Iraqi Reuters cameraman was also wounded in the
incident.
At least 22 people died in violence which erupted in
the Iraqi capital on Sunday morning as the U.S. military
pressed on with new offensives to retake control of
guerrilla-held areas ahead of national elections due to be
held in January.
Tomeizi is the third Arabiya journalist to die in Iraq
following the U.S.-led invasion 18 months ago. He is the
second journalist from Hebron to die in just over a year.
Reuters Television cameraman Mazen Dana was killed by U.S.
gunfire in Iraq on August 17 2003.
Iraqi cameraman Ali Abdelaziz and correspondent Ali
al-Khatib died in March after U.S. troops opened fire on
their car in Baghdad.
