- Story Text: U.S. troops are preparing for the arrival of new
banknotes in Iraq.
U.S. troops in the Iraqi City of Mosul carried out
security measures at banks on Wednesday (October 1) in
preparation for the arrival of a new Iraqi currency.
The new banknotes are due to arrive in Baghdad on
Saturday (October 4) and will later be delivered to other
Iraqi cities for immediate circulation.
Iraqi police and members of the Facility Protection
Security Force (FPSF) took part in the security exercises
with U.S. forces.
"Each bank is making sure they have enough security in
place to ensure smooth transition," said U.S. Army Major
Derwood Spencer.
U.S. troops have said they will secure the banks for two
weeks from first circulation of the currency. They will
then pull out and leave security measures up to Iraqi
police.
