- Story Text: About 500 students and young people, belonging to an extremist Communist organisation, gathered outside Athens University on Tuesday night (July 15) to mark the first anniversary of the coup against President Makarios of Cyprus -- the coup that led to the Turkish invasion of the island.
Members of the Revolutionary Communist Movement of Greece defied a police ban on demonstrations in the centre of Athens to stage their rally.
Demonstrators had to content themselves with listening to speeches, chanting and displaying anti-Turkish and American banners. Strong police cordons guarded foreign embassies to prevent the demonstrators marching against them.
At the same time, there were extra security precautions on Cyprus itself, where Greek-Cypriot rallies on Monday started several days of demonstrations.
The United Nations peace force, which suffered more than 60 killed and injured during the fighting following last year's coup, was on a high state of alert.
Most Greek-Cypriot rallies on the island were organised to draw attention to the plight of the 200,000 refugees from the Turkish occupied north of the island, and calling for the removal of the estimated 25,000 Turkish troops still in the northern sector.
