- Story Text: At weekly Moslem prayers held in Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa
mosque, speakers have rejected any attempt to give up
Palestinian claims to East Jerusalem. Meanwhile, Israeli
security remained on alert near the Old City.
Palestinians have expressed hope that talks at Camp David
about the future of the city would result in Palestinian
control over the eastern sector of the city, captured by
Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.
As talks between Israel and the Palestinians at
Camp David focused on the future of Jerusalem, speakers at Moslem
prayers on Friday (July 21) expressed hope that Palestinians
would gain total control over the eastern section of the city.
Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said Palestinians
were committed to acheiving sovereignty over East Jerusalem.
The issue of sovereignty over Jerusalem is one of
Palestinian sovereignty over East Jerusalem if Israel want
sovereignty over west Jerusalem, that is the only principle of
sharing sovereignty that we have advocated all along which is
consistence with international law, she said.
Meanwhile several hundred Palestinians staged a march
after Friday prayers in the Balata refugee camp near the West
Bank city of Nablus.
They urged their negotiating team to stand firm on refugee
rights. Some armed demonstrators fired shots in the air.
Activists from the militant Islamic group Hamas pledged
during the march that they would continue the path of jihad,
or Moslem holy struggle, no matter what the outcome of the
summit.
Banners proclaimed: We will defend Jerusalem with our
blood. Hamas supporters burned Israeli and American flags in
the rally.
As talks between Israel and the Palestinians at Camp David
focused on the future of Jerusalem, Palestinians in East
Jerusalem expressed hope that control of the city will be
divided between the sides.
Arabic newspaper headlines at a news stand next to the Old
Citys Damascus gate reported the various solutions suggested
to resolve the issue.
Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle
East War, and annexed it in a move not recognised internationally.
Israel says Jerusalem must remain its undivided capital
while Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, at Camp David with
Barak, wants East Jerusalem for the capital of a future
Palestinian state.
U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has been urging
Israeli and Palestinian officials to make tough decisions on
Jerusalem before President Bill Clinton races back to Camp
David from a G8 summit in Japan. He left early on Thursday.
