- Story Text: As they went through their third day under curfew
imposed by the Israeli forces, a Bethlehem family said they
were more defiant than ever about overcoming the difficulties
and the violence.
Since Tuesday (April 2), Abu Mahmoud and his family
have been living under curfew imposed by Israeli soldiers as
they rolled into the West Bank town of Bethlehem.
The army was about to lift the curfew in Bethlehem for a
few hours on Friday (April 5) to allow the residents to get
essential supples. But, on Thursday night (April 4), Abu
Mahmoud, his wife, mother and son, were still locked in their
house, cooking and watching the news on television. The sound
of gunbattles echoed throughout the rooms.
Sharon has brought us back 120 years, but we will not die
of hunger," said Um Adnan as she was grinding flour using an
old stone wheat grinder.
"We have gone through all the wars they (the Israelis)
have committed, and we have lived through them, I think this
is the last war because this is the worst, said Abu Mahmoud.
At least nine Palestinians were killed in heavy overnight
fighting in two West Bank towns after U.S. President George W.
Bush pressed Israel to reverse an eight-day-old offensive on
Palestinian-ruled areas.
Israel launched its offensive last Friday (March 29) after
a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 26 Israelis. It says it
wants to root out people responsible for a spate of bombings.
Palestinians say Sharon's offensive aims to oust or kill
Arafat, destroy his Palestinian Authority, scrap interim peace
deals signed since 1993 and block their hopes of independence.
Israel says it will not harm the Palestinian leader.
